Principal Expands Accelerated Underwriting to Eligible $5 Million Life Cases

The carrier previously described a general $3 million ceiling, with a $5 million exception for one product. Its expanded path also allows digital health data to replace a physician’s statement when appropriate.

Principal says eligible life-insurance cases with face amounts up to $5 million can enter its expanded accelerated-underwriting process. For someone seeking substantial coverage, that creates a potential route into the process at a higher amount. It is an opportunity to be considered, not a promise of approval or a medical-exam waiver.

The distinction matters because Principal described a general $3 million accelerated-underwriting ceiling in January 2025. It already allowed up to $5 million for Principal Executive Variable Universal Life III, so the higher amount was not entirely new. A September 9 carrier update linked Principal’s newer message about the expansion; the carrier message does not specify an effective date.

What could change in the review

Principal also says it is increasing its use of digital health data instead of an attending physician statement when appropriate. In a case where that substitution applies, the insurer can use digital health information in place of requesting that particular doctor’s report. Principal does not say every applicant will avoid an exam or a physician’s statement.

The $5 million figure describes the maximum face amount for eligible cases. Principal’s message does not specify eligible age ranges, covered products or state availability. Applicants considering coverage above the earlier general $3 million ceiling should confirm the current rules for their product and location before counting on the expanded process.
